San Ildefonso Pueblo
Home to the legendary potter Maria Poveka Montoya Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo is known for traditional black on black pottery with a highly polished finish and black matte design, as well as red and polychrome pottery. Maria’s decades of work, much of it with her husband Julian, perfected techniques producing some of the most sought-after pottery works of all time. Members of Maria Martinez’ family, including her son, Popovi Da and grandson, Tony Da, continued the family’s pathway of innovation. Maria’s great grandson, Jerrod Da is a well-known painter. The Pueblo’s tradition of great potters continues and San Ildefonso painters, jewelry makers, weavers, carvers, seamstresses, and moccasin makers continue to flourish there as well.
