San Lorenzo Feast Day, Acomita, Pueblo of Acoma
Acomita, the farming village of the Pueblo of Acoma, below the main Sky City location, is the site of sacred dances in the Acomita Plaza, festival foods and ceremonies honoring San Lorenzo. The Feast Day of San Lorenzo coincides with Pueblo Independence Day, the Anniversary of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. On August 10, 1680, Po’pay, a Tewa religious leader and medicine man from Ohkay Owingeh (formerly San Juan Pueblo) led a coordinated uprising of the Pueblos lasting 11 days. On August 21 more than 2000 Spanish Conquistadors and settlers fled the Spanish Imperial Province of Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico, to the El Paso area of Texas. It is said that planning for the Pueblo Revolt began in 1675, after Po’pay and nearly 50 other Pueblo religious leaders were brutalized by the Spanish Catholics for practicing their traditional religions. The Spanish did not return to the province for 12 years. Acomita Village is located on Pueblo Road, south of Interstate 40 at Sky City Casino exit.
