Building Worlds: Ken Fury and Gary Medina Cook at MoCNA

This exhibition brings together contemporary New Mexico Genízaro artists Ken Fury (Genízaro) and Gary Medina Cook (Genízaro) to foreground a history long obscured in the cultural narratives of the American Southwest. Genízaros are detribalized, mixed-heritage Indigenous People in the American Southwest descended from Native American Captives who experienced Spanish Colonial servitude, assimilation and in some cases were part of Land Grant settlements.  Spanish Colonial Governors positioned freed Genízaros on the outer fringes of the frontier. These communities functioned as human buffer zones and militias to protect central towns and Pueblo villages from raids.  Ken Fury’s work is in mixed -media paintings and jewelry, while Gary Medina Cook is an experimental video artist.  His one hour documentary, The Genizaro Experience is a portion of the exhibit.
