Deer Dance at Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo
This powerful and beautiful sacred ceremony and dance, always occurring at Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo (Formerly San Jan Pueblo) in mid-February, honors the relationship between the Pueblo, nature and the Jicarilla Apache. Ceremonies begin at Sunrise but often the dancers do not enter the public dance ground until mid-morning. Some Deer Dancers wear antlers portraying deer, others represent hunters and amongst them are singers and drummers.
